June 20, 2024 –

In celebration of Pride Month, he Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ rights advocate, recognizes great LGBT+ Americans who were forced to hide their sexual orientation due to America’s rampant homophobia. We honor their outstanding contributions this Pride month, as we work to end LGBTQ+ discrimination. Our honorees are:

  1. Liberace: His dynamic personality and piano pyrotechnics made him the highest-grossing performer in the world at his peak. But had the secret of this piano prodigy’s sexuality ever been revealed, he wouldn’t have made it as an accordion street busker.
  2. Truman Capote: The brilliant and award-winning author penned the classics, In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but the world would never have enjoyed his genius if word he was gay had leaked out.
  3. Michael Jackson: The closeted King of Pop was forced to resort to molesting young boys, thanks to America’s intolerant anti-LGBT+ attitudes.
  4. Middle and High School Girls’ Gym Teachers: These heroic women had to keep their lesbianism a secret in order to help girls re-consider feminine stereotypes.
  5. Richard Simmons: The fitness guru helped millions of Americans to get in shape and feel better about themselves through his TV show and exercise video sales. But, he had to hide his LGBTQ+ identity beneath a fake manly demeanor.

The Human Rights Campaign salutes these great American heroes! We hope that America will one day fully embrace LGBTQ+ lifestyles, so we can all joyfully celebrate Pride not just in June, but year-round.
